Results are weeks away, but counselling preparation needs to start now. Most students lose seats not because of their score, but because they missed a deadline, filled choices badly, or didn't know which quota they were eligible for. This guide covers everything.
MCC NEET UG counselling is conducted at mcc.nic.in. Bookmark this. For state quota, you'll need your respective state's medical counselling authority website.
Two Types of Counselling β Know Which Applies to You
AIQ Counselling (15% seats)
Conducted by MCC at mcc.nic.in. Covers 15% seats in government medical/dental colleges, all central university seats, deemed university seats, and ESIC/AFMC seats.
State Quota Counselling (85% seats)
Conducted by each state separately. Covers 85% seats in government colleges + all private medical/dental college seats. Must apply via your state's counselling authority.
You can (and should) participate in both AIQ and state counselling simultaneously. They run in parallel, with different registration windows and choice-filling phases.

Total available seats across all colleges and quotas published at mcc.nic.in
Register, pay security deposit (βΉ10,000 for UR/OBC, βΉ5,000 for SC/ST), and fill choices
Allotment result published. Report to allotted college within deadline or forfeit seat.
Three more rounds follow. Many seats are available in later rounds β don't give up early.
Step-by-Step: How MCC Counselling Works
Create account using NEET roll number, email, and mobile. Pay the registration fee: βΉ1,000 for UR/OBC, βΉ500 for SC/ST/PwD.
βΉ10,000 (UR/OBC) or βΉ5,000 (SC/ST). This is refundable if you don't get a seat or withdraw before reporting. Non-refundable if you report and leave.
Add colleges and courses in your preferred order. You can add up to 200+ choices. Fill as many as possible β more choices = better allotment odds. LOCK your choices before the deadline.
MCC's algorithm allots based on rank, category, and your locked preference order. You get the best college from your list that has a seat available at your rank.
If allotted a seat: pay fees and report to the college. Or choose to "upgrade" and wait for a better seat in Round 2. If not allotted: your registration automatically continues to Round 2.
Documents You Need Ready Right Now
Start collecting these today β you'll need them for online document verification and college reporting:
If you're applying under OBC Non-Creamy Layer for AIQ, the certificate must be in the Central Government format issued within the current financial year. State-format OBC certificates are not accepted for AIQ counselling.
Choice Filling Strategy β This Is Where Most Students Lose
Choice filling is the most important step in counselling, and most students do it wrong. Here's what the data shows works:
- Fill ALL options β Never leave the choice list half-empty. An allotment to a lesser-preferred college is always better than no allotment.
- Research previous year cutoffs β For each college, check the opening and closing ranks from 2025 counselling to estimate if your rank falls in their range.
- Prioritise course over college for alternative courses β A government BAMS in a good state beats a private BDS in a random state, for most students.
- Lock before the deadline β Unlocked choices are treated as if you didn't participate. This mistake ends careers every year.
- Both MCC and state simultaneously β Register for your state counselling at the same time. They run in parallel.
What If You Don't Get a Seat in Round 1?
Don't panic. The mop-up round and stray vacancy round often have significant seat availability β colleges that went unfilled, students who withdrew, and newly released seats all show up in later rounds. Students with ranks in the 3β5 lakh range have gotten government seats in mop-up rounds in previous years.
The key is staying registered and active through all rounds. Don't withdraw prematurely.
Planning for a second attempt if counselling doesn't go as hoped?
The students who do best in their dropper year are the ones who start planning before their current result even comes in. Padhle's AIM720 batch starts fresh cohorts and the earlier you begin, the better your preparation cycle.
